Medina's note

The pepper and the oil are not for flavour. Curcumin — the yellow compound in turmeric — is poorly absorbed on its own; piperine from black pepper and a little fat both measurably improve how much of it your body actually takes up. It is one of the few kitchen folk-rules that holds up.

What you need

  • 150 gfresh gingerunpeeled, scrubbed
  • 80 gfresh turmeric rootor 2 tbsp ground, if you cannot find it fresh
  • 4lemonsjuice only
  • 200 mlwater
  • 0.5 tspblack pepperfreshly and coarsely ground
  • 1 tbspcold-pressed olive oil
  • Raw honey, to taste
